"Reflective practice is the ability to reflect on one's actions so as to engage in a process of continuous learning" - Donald Schon
What Is Reflective Practice?
Reflective practice is a process used by leaders, managers, researchers, and those who work in professions like law, accountancy, healthcare, and architecture. It is a way to solve problems as by learning from real life experiences. Strategically ponder on encounters with others (e.g. peers, clients, friends), explore how these worked, and discover unexpected lessons and insights to expand your personal and professional life.
Over time many disciplines have advocated for the principles of reflective practice as part of continuous development. You can use reflective contemplation when learning, for example when you are thinking something you are reading or watching, or an experience you are going through. It is also really useful to expand who you are as a human being. It helps you to think about what you want to do next, reflect on your life and relationships, and identify unexpected learnings from the past and present as you step into the future.
Reflection is a very personal thing and different people define it in different ways. It is important to remember that there is no one 'right' way of explaining what reflection is, or how it is done. A lot depends on your own circumstances and context. Our aim is to provide you with suggestions so you can also become a reflective practitioner.
Who Does Reflective Practice?
Reflective practice is for anyone who wants to increase self-awareness. Self-awareness is a key element of emotional intelligence. It helps you to understand others. Having a reflective practice helps you develop creative and critical thinking skills.
It is part of the process of personal development for professionals and is a excellent add-on for anyone in supervision, a coach, or someone seeking to understand themselves more.

Who Writes The Reflective Practitioner Newsletter?
Hi. I'm Saiyyidah (say-ee-dah). I am a life long reflective practitioner! I am also an independent researcher, a non-practicing Architect, a business coach, inclusion and difference coach and tutor.
I study and teach identity, context, relationality, and culture across a range of disciplines – organisations, research, wider society. I uncover strategies and tactics that support people to be their best. This creates optimum, spaces for growth, inclusion, and expansion.
After 8 years of part time study, I finished my doctorate in January 2022 and successfully passed in May 2022. At the oral examination my work was called 'pioneering' and 'paradigm shifting.'
I believe that it has never been more important for us to carve out time to think and reflect. That is why I invite you to become a reflective practitioner, or explore ways to enhance your practice.
