In 1998 I was on the way to the gym after work and was involved in a major car accident which left me unable to even peel a potato! I spent six months sitting on the sofa, feeling sorry for myself, eating bad food and watching trash TV. Then one day I woke up and decided that I was not going to accept the situation I was left in. In this blog post, we look at pain and the power of the mind.
When one experiences pain it is really difficult to focus on anything else. If you have ever been in a situation where you've had a papercut you know how you can’t feel anything else in that situation, right? But when you have an illness that results in regular pain, or you exercise and feel pain for the next few days as your body adjusts what is really going on? If you are in chronic pain (i.e. pain that lasts for more than six months) it could be that there are triggers which make it worse – anger, thinking your situation is worse than it really is, not having enough sleep,...
We have all been in situations when we feel stuck in a rut. We don’t know how to get out of it and that makes it even worse. The downward spiral of beating yourself up and blame starts and you then end up even more stuck. Sometimes it manifests itself simply when you have got to the end of a day and haven’t achieved what you wanted to; other times you could get to the end of the week or month and feel like you have done very little; sadly, the feeling of being stuck can sometimes show itself as the dinosaur it is when you don’t even want to get out of bed. If we are honest with ourselves then at some point in our lives we have all felt stuck. Thing is there is something you can do to get unstuck. In this post I share with you exactly what I do and recommend to you.
The impact of being stuck is not just on you, it is also on others around you and that is why it’s something that is important to address head on. A simple solution to being stuck is to have a...
Coaching is a process that aims to “improve performance” and focuses on the present rather than the future. Coaching is considered by some as “a facilitator of learning,” meaning that they are trained in helping an individual to unlock their own potential, rather than as an expert in a subject.
It also emphasises the difference between a teacher and a coach: while a teacher teaches, a coach will help the individual to learn and improve their performance.
Therefore, a good coach will always believe the individual has the answer to their own problems, but may need help in finding the answer. Coaching involves the belief that “an individual has the answers to their own problems within them.” The key skill of coaching is asking the right questions to help the individual work through their own issues.
“The Inner Game of Tennis” by Timothy Gallwey discusses an “inner voice” that is the biggest obstacle to success, rather than...
There is a credible alternative to going to university these days. For a start, not everyone can afford to go to university, another thing is that not everyone wants to go to university. At Liberation Club we are always going to encourage you to improve your life and that starts with education. That education can come from watching videos on YouTube (the right ones of course!), or from taking a structured course online or at university.
Back to this, if you want to start a business and you are a teenager then it is more than possible to do. These days it has never been easier. Below are 16 tips and recommendations for how you could get started.
As a long term perfectionist in this post I am going to look at the different types of perfectionism and what you can do to respond to them.
I don’t know if you have ever thought about this but there are different types of perfectionism.
One is neurotic perfectionism, which is the extreme form: a neurotic perfectionist allows their achievements to define them while setting unrealistically high standards for themselves at the expense of everyone and everything else in their life.
The other is healthy perfectionism. This person is positively motivated to succeed but prioritises and does not let failures and setbacks define them and their ability.
For me this means that whilst many people see perfectionism as something that is incorrect, I see it as something to be managed and something to aspire towards. I know that it is not possible to be perfect, flawless, etc… but it is possible to strive to be the best that you can be, right?
Healthy perfectionism is achieved by:...
The only real way to work past your lazy nature is firstly to accept it. Once you have done so, it is easier to help working past it. This will be a slow process and will not occur overnight.
The KEY to this is finding a motivation for exercise. For many people, this is to decrease the risk of diabetes, heart disease and cancer, and for many others, this is to lose weight and therefore gain confidence and other positive aspects that come from exercise such as endorphins and serotonin release in the brain. Different people have different motivations, however it is key to know certainly what your motivation is and have a genuine drive to achieve your goal. If the drive is not genuine and does not come from you, you will most likely continue to be not exercise.
Before we say anything else, lets just be clear, the term ‘couch potato’ is a little negative and this is no surprise because the meaning is something along the lines of “a person who watches a lot of...
Sometimes making a decision can be the hardest thing in the world. You’ve done the research, you have identified some choices, you know what your gut feeling says, yet you remain stuck. Stuck in a place where you are unable to make a decision and move forward.
It is a horrible place to be when you are stuck.
I know, I’ve been there many, many times.
I want to share with you the things that I have discovered in 40+ years of decision making.
How to make decisions efficiently:
Decisions can be made using the techniques below but sometimes it is useful to learn ways that allow the decision to be made efficiently. Peter Bregman, author of 18 MInutes Find Your Focus, has some interesting techniques for making decisions:
The following is compiled from a number of posts listed at the end which summarise the reasons you may consider getting a coach. At The Liberation Club we believe that everyone should have a coach because you can continuously improve, but let’s see what we can find for you…
Are you stuck with no direction?
You need help getting to the next level, despite the fact that you may have achieved a lot already. If you are facing big decisions about life changes, such as taking a new job or getting divorced, a coach can offer you guidance that is objective and unbiased, helping you to determine what genuinely matters to you, and any deconstruct any inner voices you experience, while considering the path to take. If you feel directionless and unsure of where to go, a coach will fix this by helping you focus on and figure out your goals and purpose. Once you have a goal, a coach will be able to help you plan out manageable steps in order to slowly but surely work towards...
Matthew McConaughey is a Hollywood actor who in my opinion delivered one of the best Oscar acceptance speeches ever. Read it out loud if you can. The words are powerful –
“And to my hero. That’s who I chase. Now when I was 15 years old, I had a very important person in my life come to me and say “who’s your hero?” And I said, “I don’t know, I gotta think about that. Give me a couple of weeks.” I come back two weeks later, this person comes up and says “who’s your hero?” I said, “I thought about it. You know who it is? It’s me in 10 years.” So I turned 25. Ten years later, that same person comes to me and says, “So, are you a hero?” And I was like, “not even close. No, no, no.” She said, “Why?” I said, “Because my hero’s me at 35.” So you see every day, every week, every month and every year of my life, my hero’s always 10 years away....
Want to start running? Good for you! In my opinion you have made an excellent exercise choice. Running is not for everyone, but once you’ve started, and you realise you like (no, love!) it, then you will not look back. I think that runners are runners for life even if they don’t do it for a while.
Running is a form of exercise that you can start at low cost, with ease, and start immediately. If you can walk with some ease you can run.
In this second part of 3 articles I am going to share with you how you can run safely. Part 1 on how you start running is available here.
I absolutely hate the fact I have to write this article but here we are. I remember when I was running in my 20s before my car accident I still had to be careful about where I ran, how I ran, and what I did for safety. Sadly, it's still the same but there is some stuff that you can do which will make you safer.
As you read this don't worry about the distances I suggest at the start. If I...
